WAXING AND WANING
Moon and XXVII Wives

The concept of constellations in the Hindu religion is the most important and illustrative concept which explains a lot about other factors.
The Chandra (Moon) has 27 wives [27 Nakshatras (constellations)]. According to Hindu astrology & mythological references, Daksha Prajapati had created these 27 wives of the moon and are called daughters of Kashyap.
The famous spiel says that the Moon was much biased towards Rohini (one out of 27 Nakshatras). She was his favorite wife & he spent a lot of time with her. That resulted in ignorance for the rest of them. Daksha Prajapati had lost his calm by this bias & hence cursed the Moon that he will slowly perish & lose all his splendour. Basically, in other words he'll lose the shine and glory that he radiates all the time. Moon got utterly shocked by this because that was the ultimate attribute for him.
Later on, Moon along with his wife Rohini did tapasya & tried to please Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva could not null-void Daksha's curse. However, he softened the curse for Chandra. Lord Shiva blessed the Moon by the process of waxing & waning. It now increases in size for 15 days & then begins decreasing in size. Hence we have the waxing & waning of the Moon (the Poornima & Amawasya). This was the reason for the full moon and no moon.
Purnima and Amawasya are self-explanatory terms. Poornima is that one phase in which the moon has its fullest glow and radiates to an extreme and on the other hand Amawasya is the one phase in which the moon has no shine at all. So, that's how the moon transits between Amawasya to Poornima each 15 days in a cycle so for 27 consecutive days the moon is going to lose its shine and gain it again. That's how it can give the full attention to each and every wife of him precisely the constellations.
Thus because of this the Moon now spends each night with one of his wives in a circular ever ongoing cycle!
